Key Facts
- There are more than 50 species of ant in the UK. The most common being the Black Garden Ant.
- Black Garden Ant colonies can grow up to 15,000 individuals; however, the average is between 4,000 and 6,000.
- Other common species of ant include: Carpenter Ants, Red Wood Ants and Yellow Meadow Ants.
- Some species of ant can have a primary nest with multiple satellite nests.
- UK native ant species do not transmit any health threatening diseases.
- The only way to eradicate an ant infestation is to spray directly into the nest. The queen is normally found in the middle of the nest and she needs to be killed to successfully treat the infestation.
- The most common places to find ant nests are: under paving, in wall cavities, dug into lawns and flower beds, and in trees. However, they can also be found in many other places around the home.
- Flying ants are sexually active members of the species. The male’s sole purpose is to fertilise the female and she will then fly off to create a new colony of her own.

- Here at diypestsuuplies.co.uk we recommend using Digrain Insectaclear for dealing with all insect pests. This is based on two naturally occurring insecticides found in plants: Pyrethrum is made directly from plants while Cypermethrin is a synthesised organic compound. The latter, in particular, is ideal for household applications as it can remain effective for a number of weeks after spraying.
- Unless there are multiple ant nests around your home, a 1 litre spray should be sufficient.
Safety
- Wear gloves and wash your hands thoroughly after you have finished spraying.
- Keep pets well away from the area until the spray has dried out or has completed soaked into the entry point.
Treatment
- Locate the ant nest. If this is not obvious, find a trail of ants and work backwards until you have found the entrance to the nest. There is likely to be more than one entrance so try and locate as many as possible.
- Spray insecticide directly into the entry points. You should keep spraying until they are completely flooded.
- Check the nest area during the next 3 days and if there are still ants around, repeat the treatment. Remember, there could be up to 15,000 ants in the colony and it can take a few days, and a few treatments, to kill them all.

Key Facts
- It is in its larval stage that the beetle causes damage to carpets and clothes. In its adult stage its sole purpose is to breed and lay the next generation of larvae.
- The larvae will only eat natural fibres and the most common types of these found in the home are wool, cotton, linen and silk. Wool is their favourite.
- Larvae prefer to attack the carpet fibres under static furniture as it’s the safest place. Always move your furniture around to locate areas that need treating.
- The most common beetles in the UK are the brown carpet beetle, the two-spot carpet beetle and the varied carpet beetle.
Preparation
- Remove all clothes, rugs and curtains made of natural fibres from the affected rooms. All removed items must either be washed, dry cleaned or frozen (for a minimum of 24 hours).
- Note that anything made of natural fibres that you are unable to remove from the room will need to be sprayed.
- Move static furniture away from its normal position as all damaged areas will need to be accessible when vacuuming and spraying.
- Vacuum all areas thoroughly. Focus mainly on the areas damaged by the larvae but make sure the whole room has been vacuumed.

- To successfully treat a carpet beetle infestation, it is essential that you spray insecticide over all natural fibres in the infected room, and a heavy infestation may require more than one treatment. We would therefore recommend purchasing our all-in-one Complete Treatment Pack.
Safety
- Always wear gloves, mask and fully enclosed shoes and thoroughly wash your hands after spraying.
- Wear eye protection if spraying above shoulder height.
- If you get insecticide on your skin or in your eyes wash immediately with fresh water. If there is any irritation seek medical advice.
- Only the person applying the treatment should be in the room while it is being carried out.
- Keep pets away at all times.
- If in doubt, read the instructions on the product packaging.
Treatment
- Spray the entire carpet with insecticide, starting from the furthest point away from the door and working backwards. Also, spray any rugs or curtains that could not be washed, dry cleaned or frozen.
- WARNING – if you are spraying above shoulder height you must wear eye protection. Also, make sure you are spraying with an outstretched arm and your face is well away from the end of the lance.
- Once you have finished spraying, keep out of the room for a minimum of 2 hours or until the carpet is completely dry.
- Leave the insecticide on the carpet for 7 days. Digrain Insecticlear (as recommended) is a residual insecticide and it will carry on being effective for a long time after it has been applied.
- After 7 days, vacuum thoroughly every day for 3 days.
- If you see any beetles after this 10-day period you will need to repeat the treatment. A heavy infestation may require more than one treatment before being fully eradicated.

- People react differently to flea bites but most will experience some swelling and itching. Sometimes bites will appear immediately while other times it can take several hours.
- Fleas can be carried from home to home by people as well as animals.
- You may see fleas on sofas, beds and clothing but they will always return to ground level.
Preparation
- In the infected room, clear as many items as possible off the floor.
- The floor area must be cleaned and vacuumed thoroughly, focusing on the wall/floor junction (skirting boards), under beds, behind static items of furniture and any areas pets spend time laying or sleeping.
- Once you have finished vacuuming, dispose of the vacuum bag carefully making sure that any fleas in the bag cannot escape. Dispose of the bag directly into your outside general waste bin.

There are many different types of fly in the UK but the most common are blue bottle, green bottle, house, fruit and drain fly.
Blue and Green Bottle Flies
Key Facts
- Blue & green bottle flies feed and breed on decomposing organic matter such as rotting fruit and meat, dead animals, and garden composters.
- By the time you have noticed the adult flies it’s likely that the maggots are already feeding on whatever organic matter they were laid.
- They are the biggest and hardiest types of fly found in the UK and can be difficult to fully eradicate.
Treatment
- Check all areas where blue or green bottle flies have been seen congregating. Check for potential breeding areas as described in the ‘Key Facts’ above and if you find anything, remove it and clean the area thoroughly.
- Clean all surfaces that have had fly activity and using the spray, apply a thin layer of insecticide.
- Note that Digrain Insecticlear (as recommended) is a residual insecticide and will carry on being effective for a long time after it has been applied. Nevertheless, you should reapply insecticide to all surfaces after 48 hours.
- You may need to repeat this treatment several times before the infestation is properly dealt with.
- To stop a future infestation, it is essential that you break the life cycle of the fly. This means you need to remove all potential breeding and feeding areas.
House Flies
Key Facts
- These are the world’s most common type of fly.
- They breed and feed in the same types of organic matter that are attractive to blue and green bottle flies but will also breed in any other areas that will give their maggot offspring enough food to develop, such as stagnant water and general waste.
- Due to the huge variety of potential breeding areas, house flies can be difficult to completely eradicate.
Treatment
- Follow the same treatment as described above for blue and green bottle flies.
- Additionally, house flies will often enter through open doorways and windows; therefore, to minimise their number, also spray door frames and window sills.
Fruit Flies
Key Facts
- As the name suggests, fruit flies mainly breed and feed on ripe, rotten and decaying fruit. However, they can also be found in drains, waste disposable units and bins.
- This type of fly is much smaller in size than the house or blue/green bottle flies and are therefore far more easily eradicated using a good insecticide.
Treatment
- Follow the same treatment as described above for blue and green bottle flies
- Additionally, if they have been seen flying in and out of drains then check to see if the drain is flowing correctly, as they can also breed in stagnant water. Using a bucket of water or a hose, flush water through the drain to check its flow. Liberally spray insecticide directly into the pipe to kill the flies.
Drain Flies
Key Facts
- Drain flies almost exclusively lay their eggs in stagnant or slow flowing drains and pipes.
- If you have drain flies in your house this would strongly suggest that you have an issue with one of your water pipes or drains. It’s far more common for the issue to be with an exit pipe that takes used water away from the house.
Treatment
- Try and locate the problem pipe. This can be done by observing where the majority of flies are emerging and you may need to spend some time watching for patterns.
- Once located, liberally spray insecticide directly into the pipe or drain to kill the flies.
- After you have successfully killed off the flies you will need to fix the underlying issue or it is likely that the infestation will reoccur.

Keys Facts
- Silverfish prefer to live in the dark, damp places found in kitchens and bathrooms.
- They will feed on most things but are most commonly known to eat paper, wallpaper, dead insects, glue from books and natural fibres from clothes and carpets.
- Silverfish can also be found in open packets of cereal and pasta.
- If you have silverfish in your home it is likely that you have an entry point caused by water damage. It is also likely that you have high levels of moisture in your home or even an issue with damp.
Preparation
- To successfully treat a silverfish infestation, you should firstly check the damp areas where silverfish may typically be found.
- In your bathroom look behind bath panels, sinks and toilets.
- In your kitchen look under the sink and behind the kickboards.
- Also check around any internal drains.

Keys Facts
- Spiders do a lot of good in the home by keeping fly and other insect numbers down; however, they are a cause of fear for some people and therefore may need to be dealt with as a pest.
- The only species of spider in the UK that can cause an irritating bite is the False Widow. These are normally no worse than a mosquito bite but some people can have an allergic reaction.
- Spiders seek shelter in our homes when the weather outside turns cooler and wetter.
